This Spring 2020 season, WGL will have SR select and JR Select girls teams which will play in the competitive Select bracket as part of the Newtown league. We will hold tryouts for these teams on Thursday November 7th, 2018 from 6:30-8:30 at Fowler Park, Field 8. (Rain Date TBD). After Tryouts, an email will be sent out by 11/14, notifying you whether your daughter has been assigned to select team. We will also offer a Junior Middle school Rec team that will play in the rec division of Newtown. If you are solely interested in playing Rec, it is not required to attend these select evaluations.
The select program is designed for the advanced skill /competitive lacrosse player and being a part of this team requires a higher-level commitment. The select team has a similar training methods, offense and defense, and level of intensity as a high school team. Players are expected to be able to consistently pass & catch and demonstrate all of the fundamental aspects of the game. Members of the Select teams will be required to participate in mandatory sessions of Speed & Agility Training in Jan/Feb prior to start of practice. For those who are chosen for a spot on our Select teams, there will be a second registration process with an additional cost of $100 to cover a minimum of 10 speed and agility sessions. You may register for Speed & Agility now, as Speed and Agility will be offered to all MS players, regardless of team assignment. Select players will be required to register within 48 hours of assignment to the Select team.
Select lacrosse is a commitment made by not only the player, but also the family. Attendance at all practices and games should be considered a priority, as the coaching at this level requires extensive planning with regard to the drills and training at each practice. When players are not in attendance the ability for the entire team to work on skills is compromised. Please carefully consider if your child can make this time commitment. If you have a planned conflict, please advise prior to registration. At the Select level there is no guarantee of equal playing time (like in the rec league), coaches determine their lineup and degree of playing time that most benefits the team.
Teams will play on Saturday and Sunday from February through May. The season will be run in a championship format with playoff and championship game.
What if my Daughter does not make the Select team?
If your daughter does not make the select team she will be placed on the Middle school Rec team, assuming we have #s to support.
Coach will contact the parent and offer to speak with your daughter on the skills that require further development. We would like to encourage everyone to keep playing lacrosse, working on their stick skills and developing their lacrosse IQ.
